On 10th September we received the visit of Prof. Dusan Galusek and Dr. Dagmar Galuskova, Centre of Excellence for Ceramics, Glass and Silicate Materials, Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín, Slovakia, in the framework of the EU funded project (H2020-WIDESPREAD-2014-1) "Functional and surface-functionalized glasses" (FunGLASS) coordinated by Prof. Galusek in Trenčín. The project is a joined effort of five european institutions, including the Institute of Biomaterials in Erlangen, to establish a new research centre specialized on cutting edge research in the area of glasses with special functional properties and on functionalization of conventional glasses with the aim of modification of their properties and adding new functionalities. During the visit the progress of the project was discussed which includes defining research topics in areas such as materials for personalized health care and energy-related issues, utilization of waste materials for production of new materials with high added value and application of glass-based coatings in automotive and machinery industries.
